The BMW AG, officially Bayerische Motoren Werke AG or Bavarian Motor Works (BMW), was established in 1916 and is a German automobile manufacturing company. Based in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, BMW manufactures A-Class luxury cars and motorbikes. Karl Rapp, a German engine maker, set up the Rapp-Motoren Werke for manufacturing aircraft engines. Later two Austrians, Max Friz and Franz Josef Popp with the financial backing of Camillo Castiglioni took over the Rapp-Motorenwerke and renamed it as the Bayerische Motoren Werke or BMW. The BMW logo was inspired by the rotating propeller of the aeroplane engine.
